The Royal Gunpower Mills

Year 1 & 2 went to visit the Royal Gunpower mills. The focus was science, the children were given the opportunity to learn about rockets, gravity, and air pressure. They made their own rockets out of paper and were able to fly them using air pressure. We also looked at animal habitats and we spotted birds, mammals, and insects in the grounds. Here are some photographs to show the fun we had:

Great Fire of London Day

Our topic this term is Eye on London. The children have been learning all about London and have particularly enjoyed learning about ‘The Great Fire of London’. On Monday we had a Great Fire of London workshop. The hall was set out as Pudding Lane, where the fire had started. There were different activities the children could take part in which included:

Barber Surgeons, Apothecaries, Leather Workers, Chandlers, and Weavers.

While the children were taking part in their activities some children were chosen to act out different parts of the event such as putting out the fire, or collecting and killing the rats. All the children were completely engaged and took on their responsibilities very seriously. They had to be responsible for putting out the fire and pass a bucket to each other quickly before the fire got worse. This was an experience the children will never forget and it helped enhance what they already knew about the fire and also taught them many more facts that they didn't know.

Germ experiment

For our science lesson the children carried out an experiment to see how easily and quickly germs can spread. As a class we discussed how important it is to keep our hands clean and always wash our hands especially before eating.

Germs cannot be seen which is why it is so easy to spread germs with everything we do. We carried out an experiment using glitter to represent germs. The children were amazed how quickly and easily germs can be spread.

English

In Year 1 we have been reading the book ‘Beegu’. Beegu is from another wold who somehow gets lost on Earth. Lonely and confused, she wanders off to a nearby city to find some friends. But the only friendly people she comes across are the children, while the big Earth creatures just don't seem to understand.

This story has enabled the children to make connections with their own lives by the use of drama, story telling, poetry and artwork the children have been able to say how Beegu would have felt and also develop empathy for the characters in the story.

Here is what we have been doing so far…

DT Project - Moving nursery rhymes

DT Project - Moving nursery rhymes For our DT project year 1 made moving pictures. The children in year 1 looked at different ways to make a moving picture and used split pins to achieve this. The each chose a nursery rhyme they wanted to do. They then drew a picture and decided what part they wanted to move. The used their DT skills to measure, cut, stick and carefully pierce through the split pins and created some fantastic moving pictures.

Here is a short video of what we did:

Father Christmas came to Ladbrooke!

Today was a very exciting day for Ladbrooke School.  Father Christmas came to visit all the children. Year 1 were very excited to see him and even more excited to find out they were all on his ‘nice’ list!

‘It was amazing, we got a present!’ Ege

‘I liked seeing my mummy as an elf’ Olivia

‘I liked guessing the names of all the reindeers’ James

This was not the only exciting news for Year 1 today. It was also our special treat day for filling up all our class marble jar. We had an end of term Christmas party! The children got to decorate their own hats, and had a STEM challenge where they had to work in groups to make and decorate a festive hat.

We also played a few more party games and had the opportunity to win some prizes.

Well done for working hard this term Year 1!
