Maths
I hope you all got on ok with the maths from yesterday.
Today we are going to be multiplying by 100. As with yesterday, you will find it easier to do if you use your place value chart. When we made things ten times bigger yesterday, we moved the number one place to the left on the place value chart because 10 has one zero and we are multiplying by 10.
Today we will move the numbers 2 places to the left, because we are making the numbers 100 times bigger, and 100 has two zeros.

As part of our spellings for this term, you will be learning use words that have suffixes added to them. A suffix is a group of letters which are added to the end of a word, which can change it’s type or meaning. An example of the suffixes you have looked at already is the ‘er’ suffix, where teach (a verb) becomes teacher (a noun). A suffix can sometimes change the word’s meaning or it class.
Today’s lesson is all about the suffixes ‘ate’ and ‘en’.
Part of the requirements for being a Year 4 writer is to be able to use words with suffixes correctly.

Topic
As mentioned yesterday, our topic for this term is Incredible Inventions. You were looking at the telephone yesterday and hopefully speaking to your parents/grandparents about how these devices have changed over time. How did your string telephone work out? If you want to extend your learning with this you could think about how you could change the design and the impact this might have.
To begin with today, I would like you to think about the wheel, and answer the following questions:
- What would life be like without it?
- When was it invented?
- How could things be moved around without wheels?
Ultimately, the invention of the wheel changed life dramatically.
What other inventions can you think of which have changed history? (Clue – think about transport, medicine, machines, communication)
Now have a look around your home. Make notes/lists about the following:
How many inventions can you find?
What inventions could you not do without?
What did people use before these things were invented?
Had we been in school under normal circumstances, our trip for this topic would have been to the science museum. During lockdown, it is possible to do a virtual tour of the museum.

Once on the site you need to click on level 0 (scale on the right hand side of your screen). Then by clicking on the screen and rotating 180° you will find yourself looking at the ticket office. If you follow the arrows and crosses on the floor which appear when you run the cursor over them you need to make your way past the ticket office and into the space area. Continue forward, through this area until you reach the gallery right at the end called ‘Making the Modern World’. Once inside this gallery you need to navigate around the outside and stop at the large display cabinets which line the room. Inside these, you will find lots of different inventions from different eras which show how they have changed over time. See if your parents can identify things which they had when they were your age!
