Good morning Year 4. I hope you got on ok with the rhyming from yesterday.

Today, we are going to start to write the first verses of our Red Riding Hood poem.

Each verse will have 4 lines and will be about a specific part of the story. The rhyme will work in pairs. So, the first 2 lines will rhyme and then the second two lines will rhyme.

Watch this short film clip which explains how rhyming couplets word and gives some examples.

So, our first picture on the story board, showed the cakes that mum had baked and introduced Red Riding Hood. So that is what we need to include in our first verse.

We know that hood and wood rhyme, so these are excellent starting points.

Once there was a girl called Little Red Riding Hood,

Who lived in a cottage right next to the wood.

We need two more lines to finish our first verse, and we need to tell the reader that Red Riding Hood is taking cakes that her mum baked to her gran.

Normally, we would say it just as it is above. However, in a poem you can switch the word order around a little to make your lines rhyme if you need to.

One day mum baked some cakes for Red’s gran,

“Please Red Riding Hood, take these as fast as you can.”

Notice that I have shortened Little Red Riding Hood’s name in the 3rd line, so it fits better, and used speech for the last line. Now we put it all together and we have our first verse:

Once there was a girl called Little Red Riding Hood,

Who lived in a cottage right next to the wood.

One day mum baked some cakes for Red’s gran,

“Please Red Riding Hood, take these as fast as you can.”

Your task is to try and make up verses for the next two pictures on the story board. If you get really stuck, ask mummy to look at the answers page and I’ve put some ideas to help you. Alternatively, you can send me your part written verse (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and I will try and complete it for you. Happy writing!
