St George’s Day
Good Morning Year 4.
Today is St George’s Day, and he is the patron saint of England. To mark the day, I thought you might like to learn more about him (we will return to our poem tomorrow).
Attached is a reading comprehension of the St George and the Dragon Story . There is a picture at the bottom of the story for you to colour in if you wish. Alternatively, you could draw your own picture of George or the dragon or both. I would love to see them (
There are 3 levels of challenge. Challenge 1 Challenge 2 Challenge 3 Page 1 Challenge 3 Page 2
There is a great animation by the British Council online, but unfortunately I can't post the link here.
There's also a wordsearch to do for fun.
Maths
On the link below is a copy of your shapes from yesterday with the lines of symmetry marked on.
Also, for those of you who completed the extension, there is a sheet below which explains how you could have done the task. Even if you didn’t try it, it is worth a read, because it might give you the confidence to try it next time.
Today’s work is to complete a shape where one part has been drawn along the symmetry line. You will need to read the explanation sheet first.
Challenge 1 Challenge 2 Challenge 3
Science
Some of you have asked about some science activities that you could do at home. We had already started Solids, Liquids and Gases and we had gone through different materials and sorted them. We also looked at the way the molecules inside those materials behaved (a group of you stood at the front and pretended to be the molecules). Do you also remember the experiment we did with the currants in the lemonade, where the bubbles of gas attached themselves to the currants and brought them to the top of the drink, then when the bubbles popped on the surface the currants sank down to the bottom? Finally, we looked at the melting point of chocolate in the experiment where we measured and waited for the chocolate to melt.
The next stage of our learning is to investigate water. On the sheet below you have 6 statements and have to match the correct card from the second page to the correct statement.
Follow the link below to find an experiment that you can do at home.
Finally, Ansh has sent me some symmetry photos and I have attached my favourite below. Well done Ansh.

Good morning Year 4. I hope you enjoyed the symmetry song yesterday and that you could all complete the Red Riding Hood comprehension.
Maths
L.O. draw lines of symmetry on 2D shapes
After identifying symmetrical shapes yesterday, today you will be adding lines of symmetry to a shape. Remember, if the shape is regular (all sides and angles the same), then it will have as many lines of symmetry as it does sides. So square – 4 equal sides, 4 lines of symmetry.
As an extension you can try this:
Draw a quadrilateral that is:
a) symmetrical
b) asymmetrical
Draw a pentagon which is:
a) symmetrical
b) asymmetrical
Draw a hexagon which is:
a) symmetrical
b) asymmetrical
Now, add the lines of symmetry to all the symmetrical shapes you have drawn.
English
In English today, you will need the timeline of events that you completed on Monday (or you can use the example I gave you yesterday).
You will need to watch the film again, and as you do, write down some key words that might help you with your poem. I have added some words on some of the events on the timeline to help you.
Also below is an example of a Cinderella poem completed by a previous Year 4. This is what you are hoping to achieve with our Red Riding Hood poem.
Tomorrow we will start to find rhyming words for our poems.
Finally, a mention to Shardae who also found some interesting examples of symmetry in her house. This one was my favourite.

First of all, a very big well done from Mrs Romain who has seen a lot of movement on the leader board from KS2 on TT Rockstars! Great stuff year 4, I can see some legends and breakthrough artists up there. Check the website main page for more details.

Now try this sorting symmetry game:
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-sorting
You should now be ready to try this activity – 2 levels of challenge. You have to decide whether the line drawn is a line of symmetry. The harder challenge asks you to find more lines of symmetry and complete the second half of a given shape.
English
Yesterday you watched the animation of Little Red Riding Hood and completed a timeline of events.
Today, to make sure you understand the story, there is a reading comprehension activity with 3 levels of challenge.
Symmetry pictures
Well done to Daisy, Dede, Gracie, Millie, Olly and Panos for sending me your pictures of symmetry. My favourites are on the document below. Can you guess which one belongs to who?
20 April 2020
Good Morning Year 4, I hope you’ve been able to enjoy some family time over the Easter period in the sunshine and are ready to get back to some learning!
Maths
In maths over the next few days we are going to be looking at symmetry. Follow the link below to find a short film clip which explains what symmetry is.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zrhp34j/articles/z8t72p3
Then have a look at this video which takes symmetry further than just geometry!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFzktJNmnPU
Your task for today is to find things around the house that are symmetrical and take pictures of them. If you can, edit the picture and add a line to show where the line of symmetry is. If you can’t do this, then don’t worry, just so long as you understand where the line should go.
I would be really interested to see what you have found, so feel free to send me some of your photos to
English
In English over the next two weeks, we will be telling the story of Red Riding Hood in a rhyming poem. You will watch a short animation of the story, complete a reading comprehension to make sure you all understand the story, then build up a timeline of events, create word banks, find rhyming words, understand how to set out verses and also remind yourselves about using speech marks. Your poem will need to include these as the characters will communicate with each other in the poem.
Later in the week I will be posting some poems which previous Year 4 children wrote, using the same format about the Cinderella story. These should help you with the format.
The animation can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W86K1jBJFI
Once you have watched it, watch it again and create a timeline of events. This can be a simple line, like the example on the link below.
Tomorrow I will post a completed timeline. Don’t worry if yours is not exactly the same, as you might choose to put different parts of the story into your poem.
I hope you enjoy doing today’s work and I look forward to seeing some symmetry pictures. If you would like me to look at your timeline too, then please feel free to send it to me.
Hope you have a god day and can enjoy some of the sunshine.
Good Morning Year 4.
Well, you have made it to the Easter holidays! I hope you have all stayed safe and well. For the next two weeks, there will be no posts of work for English and Maths, these will start again on Monday 20th April, but in the meantime, please do make sure you continue to read and practise those times tables – get rockin’ on TT Rockstars!
Have a Happy Easter.
Maths
So, today’s work is to read through your planner – page 101 gives you the other types of 2D shapes and their names. You need to learn the names of at least the 5, 6, 7, and 8 sided shapes.
Remember, if the shape has equal length sides, then the angles inside are also equal and they are called REGULAR shapes. If some of the sides are different lengths, then the angles will also be different and they are called IRREGULAR shapes.
Once you think you have learned them, there are some shape riddles on the sheet below and you need to work out the shape from the description given.
English
In Year 4 you need to know what a ‘determiner’ is. There are many types of determiner and at the start of the year you were given a sheet which explained them, to put into your Guided Reading book – but it doesn’t help you by being in there, so I have attached a copy below to help you.
There is also a power-point available on Twinkl at the following web address:
http://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t2-e-1817-planit-y4-spag-lesson-pack-determiners
Today we are going to practise the quantifier determiner and your activity sheet is below.
I hope you have been ok with the work so far, please do let me know if you’re having problems.
Best Wishes
Mrs Dowdall
