Thursday 4th June 2020
Good morning again Year 4. Hope you are all well and that you managed to do some exciting vocabulary work yesterday.
English
Today’s focus on the English work is spelling. There are some words for you to learn that link with the story, but importantly, there are tips for learning spelling in general, so these could help you with the weekly spelling focus.
Additionally, I have posted here the Y3/4 challenge cards so that you can start working on your card. If you can’t remember which card you are on, ask an adult to test you on the red card and work your way through. If any of you require the Y5/6 cards, let me know and I will post them for you. (
If you want to challenge yourself you can write your own sentences with the focus words from the story.
Maths
Today we are going to look at a different type of graph – a line graph. Have a look at this explanation on BBC bitesize. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zrg4jxs/revision/3
Also note, on the y axis (vertical,) there is a zig-zag at the beginning. This is to show you that although the scale starts at zero, some measures have been missed out. In this particular graph, there is no point in having the numbers below 18 shown as they do not appear in the data.
Check out this short film clip which explains how to read line graphs. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=line+graph+ks2+animation&&view=detail&mid=A503126A447AFE311433A503126A447AFE311433&&FORM=VRDGAR&ru=%2Fvideos%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dline%2Bgraph%2Bks2%2Banimation%26FORM%3DHDRSC3
There are 3 challenges of work today, all based on line graphs.
Good Morning Year 4
I hope you are all well and managed the work from yesterday.
For your English today, I would like you work through pages 7-9. This is focusing on unknown words. As explained, words can have different meanings, depending on the context (the way you are using the word and the sentence you are trying to create).
Following the instructions on the sheet, you need to find and underline the words you do not know the meaning of. Draw a picture to represent the different meanings and then write sentences to show that you can use the words in different contexts. If there are no words in the story that you don’t know the meaning of, investigate these words instead:
gather |
thrash |
pace |
You can, of course, investigate more words and create your own dictionary!
Maths
Following on from yesterday put these categories into the correct data type: discrete or continuous.
Children’s favourite crisp flavour |
Children’s height |
Length of leaves |
Weight of potatoes |
Colour of cars |
Goals scored in a season |
Oven temperature |
Children’s birthday month |
Number of people in a race |
Time taken to run a race |
Pages in a book |
Population of a town |
Sometimes with continuous data the numbers can be grouped. For example, for plant heights you could group it as follows:
0-10cm, 11-20cm, 21-30cm, 31-40cm etc.
In this case the bars would touch each other along the vertical sides.
Your activity today is to complete a graph from the data given and answer questions about the data.
There is only 1 challenge, and the questions are on a separate page. To challenge yourself you could make up some questions of your own.
Science
Continuing our topic of Animals including Humans, we are going to look at skeletons.
Before we start I would like you to draw a skeleton on to the outline of this body. This will be a good starting point and will show how much you have remembered from Year 2.
Then read this sheet about the different types of skeleton.
Once you have done that, there is a skeleton sorting activity. There are 3 levels and for Ch3 you will need to investigate the benefits and drawbacks of the different types of skeleton.
Hello Year 4 – welcome ‘back’ after half-term!
Firstly, a great BIG thank you again for the great video you posted with your lovely messages. It was passed across for all the other teachers and staff to see and so many of them have told me how lovely they thought it was. I feel very lucky to be your teacher.
Over the next week, we will be working through an English unit based on the story of the King of the Fishes, which can be found at this link:
https://www.talk4writing.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Y4-Unit.pdf
For today, Tuesday, I would like you to work through the booklet to page 6. If you would like some extra work, there are some additional comprehension questions.
In maths, we are continuing with our Statistics unit. So far, you have interpreted data in a pictogram and a bar chart.
Something you need to be aware of is that there are two distinct types of data – CONTINUOUS and DISCRETE.
Discrete data can only have certain values. For example, if we did a class poll on the favourite flavours of crisps, you can’t have 4.5 children liking cheese and onion, because you can’t have 0.5 of a child! Or, if we decided to do a graph of the size of children’s feet in Year 4, you can only have sizes 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 etc. You wouldn’t have size 5.7. If you counted how many times a die landed on its various numbers, you could only record 1,2,3,4,5 or 6. You can’t roll a die and land on 6.7.
Continuous data on the other hand can take any value within a range. So, if we measured the height of everyone in Year 4 and put in in a graph, some of you could be 1.43m, someone else could be 1.44m or even 1.32m.
Check out these posters to help you with the definitions.
If you were drawing a bar chart to represent the data, discrete data would usually keep a gap between each bar. For continuous data there would be no gap.
Today’s data is all about climate. There are 3 challenges – Ch3 has 2 parts, the graph and the questions are separate.
Spelling
In our weekly spellings so far, you have learned the ‘cian, ‘sion’, ‘ssion’ and ‘tion’ suffixes. This week your task is to practise all 3 and decide which word needs which suffix. The word list can be found here.
So, that’s all for today.
I have really enjoyed receiving your work and if you want to ask me any questions, have me look at some work for you, or simply share what you’ve been up to, my e-mail is:
Hi guys
Just wanted to say thank you for the amazing video message I received yesterday!
It was lovely to see you all - and great to see that you are all keeping safe.
Thank you for your messages, I have asked Mrs Prior to share it on the staff page, so the other teachers can see it too.
Hope to see you all before too long.
Take care - watch out for new posts next week (Tues onwards).
Mrs Dowdall :)
