Good Morning Year 4.
I hope you managed to create some word banks for your nocturnal creature and for Nothing’s feelings, as he waited by the pond.
Today you are going to write about Nothing’s encounter with your chosen creature.
If you look at the WAGOLL, you will notice that the first sentence continues from the original book, with Nothing continuing to look in the pond after the frog has gone. Below is a guide based on a slow write to help you. You can copy the first sentence if you can’t think of your own. If you use your own, make sure you include Nothing’s feelings.
The ripples cleared and Nothing found himself staring sadly at his own reflection.
Your second sentence needs to start with a fronted adverbial and describe how the new creature appears to Nothing.
As he did so, he noticed something else crossing the pond, except that whatever it was, wasn’t making any ripples.
Sentence 3 (and possibly 4) need to describe how the new creature moves.
Then, he felt a swoosh of air move slightly above his head, and heard a muted tap, tap tapping sound. He turned and looked above him to see a bat swooping and diving in a figure of eight movement.
Sentence 5 should be the first part of speech where the new character speaks to Nothing.
As it swooped past once more it asked, “What are you? You’re new around here.”
You then need to continue the conversation between Nothing and the creature and finish with Nothing pondering his past.
The above is set out to help you if you can’t think of how to write the insert for the story. If you are happy with your ideas, then feel free to take the story on in your own way, making sure you include movement, feelings and speech.
I would love to see your encounters once you have written them (
Maths
You already have the geometry test to complete if you haven’t already. Attached is a fun activity using Morse code which you might want to have a go at (3 sheets). As it is VE Day tomorrow and a Bank Holiday, I will not be setting any work, so enjoy your long weekend! MC1 MC2 MC3
Next week will be art week (which we usually follow at school). Details will be posted on Monday.
Wednesday 6th May 2020
Good morning Year 4, I hope you are ready for some more learning today.
On the Pupil Zone there are answers to the maths activities and the wordsearch.
English
Today, we are going to look at a WAGOLL to help you with the layout and create a word bank for the new creature that Nothing will meet, and for Nothing’s feelings. Attached are exemplars for both.
Remember you can magpie from any of the documents, but not copy everything.
I hope you enjoyed learning about the nocturnal creatures yesterday.
Once you have built up the word banks, you will be ready to put it together tomorrow.
Maths
Either today or tomorrow I would like you to have a go at the end of term test for geometry from Twinkl. You should be able to complete all the questions – just do your best.
If you can’t access all of the questions then go to Top Marks and practise the symmetry reflection game for the last question.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?a=activity19
Next week we will be starting a new maths topic – Statistics.
Science
Over the last two weeks I gave you 2 different science experiments you could do at home and both were linked to water and EVAPORATION.
With the puddle experiment, some people think that the water disappears into the concrete or between the gaps. Well, some may certainly find its way between the gaps if there were any, but the most part will EVAPORATE into the air. This means the water has changed from being a liquid into a gas, as the air that we breathe contains water vapour.
Visit these sites for an explanation of the water cycle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5gFI3pMvoI
IMPORTANT – THIS SITE HAS SOME SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES, BUT DO NOT TRY THESE UNLESS YOUR PARENTS ARE THERE TO OVERSEE YOUR EXPERIMENT.
Also, there is an experiment you can do which replicates the whole water cycle in a bag! Attached is the sheet from Twinkl. Have a go – see if it works.
Finally, there is a worksheet to complete with the stages of the cycle and a writing activity if you want to take it a stage further.
Have a great day!

Good morning Year 4.
English
I hope you enjoyed the story Nothing yesterday. Today you need to choose another creature for Nothing to meet on his adventure. Below is a link which tells you about other nocturnal animals which you may wish to use. You need to decide on a new creature, before you can choose your vocabulary to describe the creature, its movement and voice tomorrow.
https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-families/big-wild-sleepout/nocturnal-wildlife/
Once you have chosen a creature, make some notes about its habits and then draw a picture of it with Nothing in the garden.
Tomorrow I will give you a WAGOLL and you will begin to build up your vocabulary. Our main focus will be to use speech punctuation accurately.
Maths
I hope you are working your way through the Geometry recap page and have tried one or two of the deeper learning questions. As well as continuing with the geometry I would like to practise your times tables by logging on to TT Rockstars and doing a soundcheck. This is where you have 25 questions and 6 seconds to answer each one. Let’s see who can be top of the Rockstars!
Spelling
As promised I have another wordsearch for you with this week’s focus words which have the ‘tion’ suffix.
Monday 4th May 2020
Good morning Year 4 and may the fourth be with you!
I hope you have enjoyed your weekend and feel ready to start this week’s challenges, also that you and your family are managing to keep well and safe.
English
Our English this week is going to be based around the book Nothing by Mick Inkpen. You can find a reading of the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ9dXUbi7vs
Questions to think about after you’ve watched the film.
How does the prelude link to the main story?
How do you think Nothing felt, when he heard the people say, “Let the new people get rid of it?”
Over the course of the week we will write a page which could be put straight into the book! You will choose a new creature for Nothing to meet on his night time adventure, using speech marks, describing feelings and descriptive vocabulary.
Once you have watched the film clip, go to BBC Bitesize for a fun song about speech marks. It is really important that you are able to use these accurately in your writing, so that your reader knows when someone is actually speaking. Here you will find Mr Smith (sorry, not OUR Mr Smith) with a song that might help you to remember how to use speech marks correctly. Enjoy!

Then watch this animation which explains them again.

Maths
We have now come to the end of our geometry unit. The work attached is part 1 of the end of topic review. There are 50 questions to test your understanding of shapes, symmetry and angles. I suggest you work through it and it will comprise your work for today until Wednesday. On Thursday I will set some new challenges.
If you want something to further test your understanding, there is a Dig Deeper sheet attached here. I have written the sentence that you need to be thinking about as you answer the questions. Remember these questions are not a race – you get no points for finishing first, but you will get more satisfaction and a better understanding if you take your time and think of different ways to explain your answer.
I will publish answers to both of these maths challenges on Wednesday.
If there is something that you are not able to answer, check out BBC bitesize for revision of shapes and angles or Top Marks for shapes games, or go back through the challenges you have already done. If you need help, then contact me on my usual email (
Spelling
I hope you enjoyed learning your spelling words last week on occupations - which are created by adding the suffix 'cian'. This week it is the turn of a different suffix 'tion'. The word bank is attached and I will post another wordsearch later in the week.
Finally, thank you to those of you who sent your poems. I will be working on typing these up this week.
Friday 1st May 2020
Good morning Year 4. Well another new month has arrived and here we all are, still working from home!
Thank you to those of you who have sent me your Red Riding Hood poems. I will type them up and try and work out a way to show them on the website. I may also e-mail you directly with some tips of how to improve next time.
For today, your English challenge is to finish the poem, if you haven’t already. If you have finished, then your task is to find 3 things to edit. This could be to:
- look at the length of your lines and, if any are very different in length, try and make the pair a similar length by adding or deleting some words
- check your rhyming and make sure that the lines rhyme in pairs (couplets)
- check your speech marks and make sure that any direct speech is punctuated properly
Please note, you do not have to edit every verse. Choose 3 things only. So, if you improve one rhyme, lengthen/shorten one line and add some additional punctuation to one area of speech that is fine.
I also found some Red Riding Hood paper which I have copied for you, which you can publish on if you wish, or alternatively you could draw me a picture of your favourite part of the story.
Finally, think about the message in the story. What was it trying to teach you?
Maths
Yesterday’s work was to use directions up/down to find shapes or give coordinates on the grid.
I’m sorry that ChC was not legible, so have attached it again here.
Today’s work is taking the directions a stage further by actually moving a shape from one position to another, by following instructions. This means you have to move all of the coordinates of the shape and re-draw it.
Science
Well done to Panos and Daisy who tried the science experiment and made predictions based on their knowledge. Great job guys, keep it up!
